UPDATE: Friday’s “Shots Fired” Incident Turns Out To Be Accidental

UPDATE 9/20/10: Remember the “shots fired” incident last Friday (Sept. 17th) that caused several buildings to be locked-down in Normandy Park?

Turns out the shooting was accidental.

Apparently one reason this got such a big response was that, on the very same day, an unidentified male called the City of Normandy Park and made threats to Officers.

It wasn’t until further investigation revealed that the two incidents were not related.

Here’s what N.P.P.D. sent us Monday, Sept. 20th:

Police Alert: Update on Shots Fired in Normandy Park

After further investigation it has been found that the shooting that occurred on 09-17-10 was accidental.

On that same day an unidentified male called the City of Normandy Park and made threats to Officers. After further investigation, the shooting and the suspicious phone calls do not appear to be linked.

Any persons with information regarding these cases are encouraged to call 206-248-7600 and ask to speak to any Officer on-duty.

UPDATE 9/18/10: Here’s the latest from the Normandy Park Police Department:

On Friday, Sept. 17th at approximately 11:27 a.m., there were shots fired at a residence in the 19400 block of 1st Avenue South.

No persons were injured in the shooting.

The shooting is still under investigation, and it does appear that the suspect in this case left the immediate area.

As a result of this shooting, Marvista Elementary School was placed in a temporary lock-down. The school was reopened and children were let out at the normal time on Friday.

Around that same time an unidentified male called the City of Normandy Park and made threats to Officers. This case is also currently under investigation.

As a result of these phone calls City Hall was locked down. The Normandy Park City Hall was closed and will reopen on Monday at 9:00A.M.

Any persons with information regarding these cases are encouraged to call 206-248-7600 and ask to speak to any officer on-duty.

PREVIOUSLY: The Normandy Park Police Department is reporting that shots were fired Friday morning around 11:36am in the 18400 (or 19400 – we have conflicting reports) block of First Ave South.

Due to the shooting, various area buildings were put into “lock-down” mode, including Mar Vista Elementary School (no longer locked down as of 2:45pm), Normandy Park City Hall, and the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center.

We got a phone tip on this around 1pm, and sent Nicholas Johnson out; he then “risked his life” by driving into the training center parking lot, where he was met by an officer carrying “a really big rifle” who warned him “not to get shot.” Nicholas also saw a squad of armed police scouring an area behind the center before quickly exiting.

Here’s what we know:

  • Shots were reportedly fired in the 18400 (possibly 19400) block of First Ave South around 11:30am Friday, Sept. 17th.
  • Put into “lock-down” mode were Mar Vista Elementary School, N.P. City Hall and the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center.
  • Non-essential city staff were sent home for the remainder of the day.
  • As of 2:45pm, the police investigation is currently ongoing, so if you’re in the area and you see police, be aware of the situation.
  • City Hall is still locked down, as is the training center.
  • Mar Vista is no longer in lock down mode.
  • The suspect may also have shot six shots into a residential bedroom wall. There were no reported injuries.

Here’s the email report we received from N.P.P.D.:

Earlier this morning at approximately 11:36 hours there were shots fired in the 19400 Block of 1st Avenue South.

City Hall offices and Marvista Elementary were placed on temporary lock down.

Nonessential city staff have been sent home for the remainder of the day.

Police investigation and response is ongoing.

City Hall offices will reopen on Monday September 20th.

The public will be updated as information is released.

As we learn more, we’ll update this posting, so stay tuned.
