SCAM ALERT: Don’t fall for fake Sheriff’s Office warrant phone scam

The Normandy Park Police Department issued the following alert for residents on Sunday, April 13, warning of a telephone scam where a caller impersonates a Sergeant with the King County Sheriff’s Office:

“Several citizens have been contacted by an individual who claims to be with the King County Sheriffs Office (Warrant Division). The person then claims that he is a Sergeant with King County and tells the “victim”, that a family member will have a warrant out for their arrest by midnight. The warrant is supposedly for a failure to appear for grand jury duty. The “Sergeant” then gives details on how the “victim” can payoff the warrant before it is entered into the system. The “Sergeant” tells the “victim” how to obtain a green dot money pak. Once the “victim” obtains the money pak they are to call the “Sergeant” back and give the money pak serial number to him. The “Sergeant” says the warrant is for $1000.00 but that with a $500.00 money pak it will be forgiven.

King County has been advised and they confirmed this to be a scam. If you know of anyone who has fallen victim to this, please have them contact Sergeant Sommer at 206-248-7600.”
