Safety improvements to 1st Ave South. In the near future, City of Normandy Park traffic engineers will partner with WSDOT engineers to discuss crossing data, and plan design, lighting, and potential 1st Avenue South crosswalk locations and configurations to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists. WSDOT has completed video assessment of the corridor around Manhattan Village.

Speed trailer and computerized speed signage. The recently purchased speed trailer and speed display signs have now arrived and will be up shortly. The signs are mobile and will be moved periodically to different locations throughout the city. Not only will these assist in reducing speed, the signs will also allow the City to gather data on speed as well as traffic volumes throughout the city.

Vehicle security. As the holiday season is here, Chief Yourkoski reminds us that it is important to remember to remove all valuables from our vehicles, and when that is not possible, secure them in your trunk. At a minimum, do not leave valuables in plain sight inside your vehicle.

1st Avenue sidewalk improvements. The sidewalk project is about completed. Good progress made this week after the pole removal, even a little contractor work under the lights to beat the rain.

Emergency Management. An emergency management evening public presentation, hosted by the City of Normandy Park and the Southside Seattle Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 6:30 P.M., in the main auditorium at the Criminal Justice Training Center. “What You Need to Know to Survive a Natural Disaster” will be the topic. Col. Kevin McMahan and staff from Camp Murray, Washington State Emergency Management, will provide the presentation. Camp Murray operations coordinate Washington State natural disaster services and resources. Residents and business owners from the cities of Des Moines, SeaTac, Burien, Tukwila and Federal Way, as well as Southside Seattle Chamber members are invited. The average cycle for the types of earthquakes that would be characterized as “the big one” is about 243 years, using the last 10,000 years as a measuring stick. We are beyond this average measure by 75 years. The chances of one of these earthquakes in the next 50 years is roughly between 10% and 33%. Such a quake is predicted to cause up to 30,000 landslides in the Seattle area alone (Schulz, Kathryn. “The Really Big One”, The New Yorker 2015).

Soundside Alliance Breakfast for economic development. The yearly Soundside Alliance Breakfast is Thursday Dec. 6, 2018, at 7:30AM at the Four Points Sheridan Hotel in Des Moines. The event is open to the public, but with seating capped at about 175. Greater Seattle Partners. Economic development professionals from Southwest King County have negotiated a seat for the Soundside Alliance on the Leadership Board of the new Greater Seattle Partners, the emergent regional economic development marketing organization. The Soundside Alliance for economic development includes: Normandy Park, Burien, Des Moines, SeaTac, Tukwila, Seattle Southside Chamber of Commerce, Highline College and Port of Seattle. The Leadership Board includes – along with the Soundside Alliance – Bill McSherry, chair (Boeing), Mayor Nancy Backus, Vice Chair (Auburn), Mayor Victoria Woodards, Secretary (Tacoma) and Will Einstein, Treasurer (Puget Sound Energy). The Board will coordinate the Executive Council. At this time, the Executive Council includes: Alaska Airlines, Amazon, Aviation Technical Services, The Boeing Company, Challenge Seattle, Esterline, Expedia, John L. Scott, Kaiser Permanente, Microsoft, Point Ruston, Providence Health and Services, JP Morgan Chase, PSE, Starbucks, Swedish Health Services, Tacoma Rainiers, Toray, UW, WSU, Wells Fargo, Weyerhaeuser, Wright Runstad & Company, King County-Executive, Snohomish County-Executive, Port of Everett, Port of Seattle, Sound Cities Alliance, City of Bellevue, City of Everett, City of Seattle, City of Tacoma. The cost to the Soundside Alliance will be $15,000 per year for the Soundside Alliance as a whole; the Normandy Park yearly share will be slightly more than $800.
