There is less than one month until Opening Day at the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market (sister site The Waterland Blog is a Sponsor), and what a day Saturday, June 2 will be – in its new location at the remodeled north end of the Des Moines Marina!

Coming off its most successful seasons in history (up 30% each of the past two years), the Market will have a new look during its seventh season, having outgrown the old space in the South Marina Park and moving into a true waterfront spot.

The word “Waterfront” in its name will be prominent as the location is right on the water where guest yachts are moored. Look for the new Boardwalk Bistro where you will be able to enjoy your favorite market foods while watching all the boating activities.

“Along with your favorite returning farmers, food and craft vendors, there will lots of new ones like Seattle Bagel and Total Europe, serving soups, hot dogs and sausages,” said Rikki Marohl, market manager. “Also new this year will be a Des Moines favorite, Auntie Irene’s, serving ice cream.”

The market again will feature its own wines, including last year’s favorite Waterfront White.

Opening Day activities will include a military color guard ceremony, presenting the emblem (US Flag). Other opening activities include classic cars on display, the Des Moines Arts Commission will be showcasing some local artists, radio station WARM 106.9 will be doing a remote broadcast and your pals at The Waterland Blog will be blogging live.

Don’t forget to bring your old musical instruments and donate them to the Rotary Music4Life program. They will be at the market the first three weekends in June. The program refurbishes the instruments and gives them to the Highline School students who can’t afford them.

Wayne Corey, Board President, recently commented on the upcoming season:

“We are really excited about the move to the North end of the Marina, as it will allow us to grow and expand, provide for more conveniences for shoppers and gives us greater flexibility every Saturday thru October.”

To keep up with all the current happenings at the market, please log onto the web site and sign up for our e-newsletter that comes out once a week. You can also keep up on the activities by frequently visiting The Waterland Blog!

The market will run every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. until the end of October.

See you on OPENING DAY!

New playground equipment has been installed at Normandy Park City Hall, and Community members are invited to join the City Council, Parks Commission, and City staff in a ribbon-cutting celebration and re-opening of the playground on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m.

“In 2010, the Parks Commission conducted a Comprehensive Parks Plan update and received input from community members,” reads an announcement. “One of the top priority projects was replacement of the deteriorating play equipment at City Hall Park. The Parks Commission held a series of meetings in late 2011 and took public input during meetings as well as through a survey. Three vendors presented design proposals for the new playground area and the Parks Commission selected the design of PlayCreation, a company located in Burien.”

The equipment is manufactured by Landscape Structures in Delano, Minnesota.

Funding for the equipment and installation is provided by the Normandy Park Metropolitan Park District, which was approved by voters in 2009.

MAKE YOUR MARK (or your child’s)
For a decorative touch, the City of Normandy Park is selling 6” x 6” tiles for a child’s hand or footprint. The tiles will be used for the face of the bench seat in the playground area.

Cost per tile is $25.00 and space is limited so don’t wait to reserve your tiles.

Tiles will be sold during the ribbon-cutting ceremony and after May 12th at City Hall.

A local 13-year old girl named Tori Keeth recently made her small screen debut in a new Samsung Smart TV commercial, which is airing on South Korean TV, as well as in print and digital billboards – check it out (she’s the brunette girl):

Sadly, the only way you’ll see Tori on TV is via the internet (here’s the Youtube link) – for now at least.

“Rumor has it other countries are close to picking it up to due to the popularity of the commercial,” said her Father, Dustin Keeth. “We wish her much success in following her dream. If you watch the commercial please share it, like it and put in a comment to show your support.”

This Korean commercial is her first spot, and her Dad said that she was one of four finalists for a Disney TV show, but just lost out. Tori has also been in a pilot presentation for a TLC movie that might be picked up.

Prior to this breakout gig, Tori had roles with the Hi-Liners, which definitely helped prepare her for stardom.

Tori attended Marvista Elementary School before being discovered by winning a talent contest, which lead her to Hollywood.

“She was discovered two years ago through a booth at the Puyallup Fair,” her Dad told The B-Town Blog. “She went on to win the singing competition and was sent an all-expenses paid trip to a competition in California where kids perform, sing, model, act, etc. in front of judges who are either talent agents, managers, etc.. After the competition, Tori received 25 callbacks and was picked up to be represented by both an talent agent and manager.”

Here’s Tori’s performance at a competition in LA:

According to her Dad, acting and singing has been Tori’s dream “for as long as she can talk. She is currently living in LA 6-9 months a year with her Mom and getting repeated auditions and callbacks. She’s getting close to making this a career.”

What’s life like for a 13-year old girl in Hollywood? Here’s what her Dad says:

“Tori recently got to be in a few scenes for a new TV pilot that stars the cute little girl (Maggie Elisabeth Jones) from the film ‘We Bought a Zoo.’ Tori has become friends with her since moving to California, and was recently invited to be on set and camera with her last month.”

Tori’s Dad and sister travel back and forth to see the family on a regular basis, and they communicate daily via Skype.

We think we see a real star here folks, so remember the name Tori Keeth!
