The Normandy Park Police Department is warning residents about a rise in scams targeting older adults and is urging families to take steps now to help protect their loved ones.
In a public alert posted on Facebook, the department said scammers are targeting seniors every day by phone, email, text message and social media. Police are encouraging adult children and family members to talk with their parents about common tactics and prevention strategies.
“Scammers are professionals — anyone can be tricked,” the department said in its alert, urging families to have open conversations about fraud.
Police recommend creating a safety plan with older relatives, including an agreement to call a trusted family member before sending money, purchasing gift cards or completing wire transfers.
Families should also talk with loved ones before they accept downloads to their phone or computer.
The department stressed that government agencies and legitimate companies will never demand payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or urgent wire transfer.
Police also advised families to encourage assertiveness. It is acceptable to hang up, say no or question anyone asking for money, the alert states.
In addition, officers recommend reassuring seniors that if they are targeted or even victimized, it is not their fault.
“One conversation could protect their life savings,” the department said. “Talk to your parents today.”
