Looking for nominations for the City’s Heritage Tree Program

As we look ahead to our upcoming Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 25, 2026, I’d like to encourage residents to consider nominating a tree for the Normandy Park Heritage Tree Program.

Trees are one of the defining features of Normandy Park and an important part of what makes our community special. According to a 2018 tree canopy survey conducted by the King Conservation District, nearly 740 acres—about 46 percent of the city—are covered by tree canopy. That is one of the highest percentages in King County and reflects our community’s long-standing appreciation for the natural environment.

The City created the Heritage Tree Program to celebrate and recognize some of the most unique and significant trees in our community. These may be trees with historic connections, exceptional size, distinctive beauty, or rare horticultural value. The program helps raise awareness about the importance of our urban forest while highlighting the role trees play in shaping Normandy Park’s character and sense of place.

Heritage Tree designations apply to trees located on private property, and participation in the program is entirely voluntary. The designation does not place additional regulations or protections on the tree. Instead, it serves as a way to recognize and celebrate these remarkable natural assets and encourage their preservation.

Currently, seven trees in our community have been designated as Heritage Trees, but we know there are many more that could be recognized as such. If you have a tree that you believe is special, I encourage you to learn more about the program and consider submitting a nomination. Property owner approval is required before an application can be considered.
