SUMMARY:'Walk-n-Talk' around Chelsea Park this Sunday\, Sept. 1
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n \nIt’s walking time again. Let’s begin the month of September and enjoy the long\, holiday weekend by heading north from Burien Town Square into and around Chelsea Park. \nOther times we’ve found these scenic gems in the neighborhood: Dottie Harper Park\, Burien Community Garden\, white-painted tree trunks\, Bird-House House\, Stormwater Park\, Green House\, Purple House. What new things will we spot this time around? \nWHEN: Sunday\, Sept. 1\, 2019: 2 p.m. meet-up. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m. \nWHO: Walkers of every level and ability\, plus four-legged friends \nWHERE: Meet on the grassy knoll at Burien Town Square (480 SW 152nd Street Burien\, WA. at the corner of SW 152nd & 5th Place SW). \nDISTANCE: About 2.5 miles\, round trip. Mostly flat. \nPlease print out a copy of the map below if you’d like one as we’re walking. \n \n \nIntentions for Burien’s Walk-n-Talk: \n\n“Encourage active living to support physical and mental health.” (Part of Burien’s new “Vision”.)\nInitiate conversation between friends and neighbors\, new and old.\nNurture the idea of our Town Square as the “living room” of Burien\, our center and gathering place.\nCreate our own little “volksmarch“\, in the European tradition.\nSupport our local cafés and restaurants on Sunday afternoons.\n\nThe Walk-n-Talks are enjoyed by folks from different communities coming together for conversation… a chance to talk to people one wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to chat with and get some exercise and fresh air at the same time. Walkers span the ages\, including tiny folks (Burien’s Walkers of the Future)\, and four-legged friends. Many have become “regulars” enjoying the Walk-n-Talk each month. \n“Getting out on two feet (or two wheels) is a chance to entertain your “Inner Explorer”\, to discover visual and architectural details you might not otherwise see. One of the bonuses is the varied route. I don’t know about you\, but when I’m in my car\, I generally drive the same route every time. Bo-ring! When I’m walking or riding my bike\, my curious nature is heightened and I travel roads I’ve never seen before (even though I grew up here in Burien).” \n– Maureen\, WABI Burien President \n\nFor further information\, please contact Maureen Hoffmann\, WABI Burien President\, at info@wabiburien.org.

DESCRIPTION:The next FREE Repair Café will be held at the Burien Library\, from 3 – 6 p.m. on Wednesday\, Sept. 4: \nBring your small household items including clothing and we’ll work on them! We want to keep stuff out of the landfill\, conserve resources and save you money. FREE to the public! \nYou must be present during the repair. Clothing and other textiles you bring in for mending should be washed first. \nAll King County repair events are first-come\, first-served\, with no appointments or set times. But please contact us in advance if possible to let us know what you plan to bring\, so our fixers can be prepared. For specialized repairs (which many are)\, please bring any specific parts or materials needed for your repair. \nTo ask about your repair\, or if you have questions about this event or any King County repair events\, contact Tom Watson by e-mail or at 206-477-4481. You can also post a comment or question on the Facebook event page external link for this Burien Library repair event. Thanks! \nWHAT: Burien Repair Café \nWHEN: Wed. SUMMARY:Punk\, goth & alley art will come 'Out of the Shadows' in Burien on Friday\, Sept. 6
DESCRIPTION:‘Out of the Shadows’ – an art show inspired by punk\, goth and alley art – will be held at the Community Folk Art Gallery in Burien on Friday\, Sept. 6. \n“People are hungry for arts and culture\, and the bacteria-ridden counterculture scenes of punk\, goth and alley art should produce a fine crop\,” Curator Amber Raven said. \n“The reception should be fairly sweet\, there’ll be some live painting\, instillation work\, sticker swap\, buttons\, zines\, d and d\, and some cool custom screen printed t-shirts from our friends at Clone Press\,” she added. “All kinds of fun stuff set to a cool scene!” \n \nThe event has also been offered up as a resource for local arts groups to come and hang out\, with the intent of some networking done in a casual non-solicitous way. Oftentimes\, organic conversations can contribute to impactful interactions/relationships. Those conversations formed over art can also unify seemingly disparate attitudes and help form a stronger cultural net that we are all working towards building. \nPlease join curator Amber Raven and crew at this B-Town Beat Art Walk venue on the First Friday of September (the 6th) from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Community Folk Art Gallery in beautiful downtown Burien (at 639 SW 152nd Street; map below). \n“Please invite your arts supporting friends to come and party with us!”

SUMMARY:League of Quiet Skies Voters Candidate Forum will be Thurs.\, Sept. 19
DESCRIPTION:The League of Quiet Skies Voters will hold a candidate forum on Thursday\, Sept. 19\, 2019 for Port of Seattle Commission general-election candidates to discuss their views on Sea-Tac International Airport operations\, expansion\, and the potential impacts upon human health and the environment. \nThe details: \n \nWHEN: Thursday\, Sept. 19\, 2019\, 6 – 8 p.m. \nWHERE: Burien Community Center\, 14700 6th Ave SW\, Burien\, WA 98166 (map below) \nGeneral election candidates for Port Position 2 – Sam Cho and Grant Degginger – have confirmed participation in the forum. Garth Jacobson – running for Port Position 5 – is also confirmed. “We are grateful that Mr. Cho\, Mr. Degginger\, and Mr. Jacobson will appear and discuss these issues that are of such importance to so many voters in King County – and in particular\, voters among the 240\,000 citizens in the six “airport neighbor communities” – Burien\, Des Moines\, Federal Way\, Normandy Park\, Seatac\, and Tukwila. We also know that airport operation increases and expansion has created high interest from other impacted communities – including Vashon-Maury Island\, Kent\, Beacon Hill\, and many others” said Quiet Skies Coalition President Larry Cripe. \nScott Schaefer\, South King Media founder and editor for seven hyper-local media news blogs\, will serve as moderator. The format will include four segments: a brief candidate opening statement; a moderator-led question and answer session; community questions; and candidate closing remarks. \nThe League has been advised that Position 5 incumbent\, Fred Felleman\, will not be able to participate based upon a schedule conflict. \nAbout the League of Quiet Skies Voters\nAs aircraft noise and emissions present increasing human health and environmental concerns\, impact property values and public safety\, and create social\, economic\, and environmental justice disparities\, the League of Quiet Skies Voters seeks to empower voters living in the shadow of the 8th busiest airport in the United States with the information to fully understand the risks of this expansion\, the alternatives\, our rights and choices\, and how to engage our policymakers for change. The League was created as an association of regional citizen-led groups including: \n\nQuiet Skies Puget Sound\nQuiet Skies Coalition\nFederal Way Air Noise Alliance\nThe Briefing Project\n\nThe League’s Town Hall in April 2019\, attended by an estimated 300 people\, featured Congressman Adam Smith\, Chris McCann\, Washington State Representatives Mike Pellicciotti and Tina Orwall\, and The Briefing Project’s Steve Edmiston. \nFor the 2019 primary elections\, the League published candidate questionnaire responses addressing: (1) how to prioritize economic growth\, meeting the need for increased travel and cargo\, and addressing human health and environmental impacts; (2) adoption of the World Health Organization’s Environmental Noise Guidelines; (3) delaying airport expansion until pending scientific and aviation impact studies are completed; and (4) adoption of the Port of Seattle Airport Neighbor Community Accords. The candidate responses can be reviewed at https://www.loqsv.org/candidates.

SUMMARY:White Center Repair Event will be Sat.\, Oct. 5 at Steve Cox Memorial Park
DESCRIPTION:A White Center Repair Event will be held on Saturday\, Oct. 5\, 2019\, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Steve Cox Memorial Park field house. \nIt’s FREE! Bring in your small household items and clothing\, and experienced “fixers” will try to repair and mend them. \n“Join us for this fun waste reduction event\, at the historic field house in Steve Cox Memorial Park\, just east of McLendon Hardware.” \nSign-ups are informal and not required\, but if you would like to sign up to attend\, contact event coordinator Tom Watson by e-mail or at 206-477-4481. You can also post a comment or question on the Facebook event page for this event. \nDuring this repair event – also in the gym – they will have: \n\nFree community clothing swap. Bring and take any clothes you like! Clothes should be washed and in wearable condition. Hosted by the King County Parks White Center Teen Program.\nDonations box for WestSide Baby. For a list of most-needed new/used children’s items and acceptable donations for this White Center-based non-profit\, visit WestSideBaby.org.\nKids’ activities. Coloring and games for young children\, while their parents are having their items worked on at the repair event.\n\nMore details on the repair event itself: \n\nIt’s “first-come\, first-served” (matching the items with the fixers with the appropriate skills) and we try\, if possible\, to work on at least one item from everyone who comes in. If you bring more than one item\, we will try to work on your other items as time allows.\nYou must be present during the repair. There is no assurance an item can be fixed\, or that attempting to fix it won’t break it even more. We (our fixers) can decline to work on a job\, for any reason.\nBecause this event ends at 12:30 pm\, we will probably not start any new jobs after 12:00 noon.\nFor specialized repairs (which many are)\, we may not be able to work on your item unless you bring the specific parts or materials needed for your repair.\nPlease only bring items small enough to be easily carried in by one person. Do not bring any items that are dirty (including on the inside)\, leaking\, dangerous\, contain gasoline\, or have a strong odor. Clothing and other textiles that you bring in for mending should be washed first.\nAlthough “walk-ins” are fine\, please contact us in advance if possible\, so we can confirm that it’s an appropriate item\, and so we can let you know what else you should bring with the item (parts\, cords\, attachments\, etc.)\, to ensure the best likelihood of potential repair.\n\nThis event will be the 65th King County-sponsored repair event (they’re all over King County\, outside Seattle) and the eighth in White Center. \nOf those seven that have previously been in White Center\, two were at the King County Housing Authority’s Seola Gardens\, and five have been at the field house. \nFor more info on this and other repair events\, visit KingCounty.gov/repair-events or KCecoconsumer.com. \nRepair events season runs March through October\, and this Oct. 5 White Center event is the last this year. Organizers are expecting to have 12 of these King County repair events next year\, and will probably start scheduling those in December. \nThis repair event – aimed at reducing waste and building community! – is brought to you by King County Solid Waste Division and King County Parks Division. See the schedule for all King County-sponsored repair events (and other area repair events\, as we hear about them). \nThe Steve Cox Memorial Park field house is located at 1321 SW 102nd Street:
