Normandy Park City Manager’s Report for week ending Mar. 21, 2025

Real-Time Translation Capabilities Are Here for Text-to-911

King County 911 service continues to enhance its ability to serve all communities by improving language accessibility in emergency communications. One of the most significant advancements in this area is the Text-to-911 Automatic Translation Service, which allows it to receive and respond to emergency texts in multiple languages in real-time.

Currently, the service supports 41 languages, with 25 of those available for automatic detection. This means the system can identify the language of an incoming text and begin translating immediately. This capability ensures that non-English speakers and individuals with limited English proficiency can communicate with 911 call takers via text more efficiently during emergencies.

This service represents another step forward in their commitment to removing communication barriers and ensuring that help is accessible to everyone, regardless of their language. As with any new technology, King County will monitor translation services and work closely with dispatchers to ensure they have the tools and training needed to manage multilingual emergency text communications effectively. They will also continue to evaluate and enhance this program as new capabilities become available.

While Text-to-911 is vital for increasing accessibility to emergency services, calling is the preferred method for those who can speak and hear. Please call or text 911 only if an emergency response is needed from the police, fire, or medics. The Non-Emergency Line for the Normandy Park Police Department is 206.248.7600.
