February has arrived, and with it all manners of Valentine’s celebrations at Des Moines’ Marina Mercantile. Given the Merc’s increasingly popular Afternoon Tea program, the fun of course starts there.
“We always love to have a nice themed Afternoon Tea,” says the Merc’s Brenda Sutherland, “And Valentine’s – or Galentine’s if you prefer! – is pretty much the perfect theme for tea.”
It starts, as it always does, with the Mercantile’s house-baked treats and fresh sandwiches. Whether heart shaped, topped with red berries, or tinged pink, the bakers make sure to delight the eyes as well as the taste buds. And there is, of course, chocolate involved!

The Merc is also hosting a special Paint & Sip: Valentine’s Edition with frequent collaborator Jenna Brechbiel on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.

And for those who want an evening Tea Event – complete with a chance to dress up – there’s a special “Romantic Regency Tea Event” on Friday, Feb, 27 from 5-8 p.m. That one will feature buffet-style Afternoon Tea Treats, themed music and décor, and classic Jane Austen adaptations playing on the screens. Costumes most definitely encouraged!
“We’re also continuing to evolve our menu,” notes co-owner (and Brenda’s husband) Richard Mockler. “We just introduced a Spicy Vegan Sloppy Joe that’s been a big hit – even with our meat-eating customers, a popular Mushroom Toast option for Sunday Brunch, and there are more new dishes on the way.” Not to mention more exciting new cocktails in the literary-themed collection (like this winter’s “Sense and Senchability,” featuring reposado tequila, sencha and jasmine syrup, lemon, and more) from bartender Katy Harrison.
Even with the Hawks in the Super Bowl, February can be a bit of a drag – but Marina Mercantile is always ready with a warm cuppa’, fun events, delicious opportunities to break bread with family and friends, and special winter libations.
