The Normandy Park City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024.
Key topics included public safety, stormwater utility fees, fireworks penalties, and security upgrades for city facilities.
Public Safety Initiative
Mayor Eric Zimmerman announced that he had recently attended a regional summit of South King County mayors. The primary focus of the summit was public safety, with mayors discussing the creation of a shared compact or statement of values. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen regional public safety initiatives and provide a unified voice when advocating for local needs to county and state officials.
Stormwater Fee Adjustment Delayed
City staff recommended increasing the stormwater utility fees for 2026. However, due to the absence of Deputy Mayor Sue-Ann Hohimer and Councilmember Susan West, the council decided to defer the decision until the next meeting. A potential increase from 2% to 3% is being considered.
Councilmembers Mike Bishoff and Shawn McAvoy expressed concerns about the current rate structure for stormwater fees, particularly for small, unbuildable parcels that have seen significant fee increases in recent years. They advocated for a review of the fee structure before implementing any increases.
Fireworks Penalty Changes
While the underlying fireworks laws remain unchanged, the council unanimously approved updates to the penalties for violating those laws. The new penalties include a $250 fine for the first offense, a $500 fine for the second offense, and a misdemeanor charge for subsequent offenses. The city hopes these penalties will be easier for police to enforce, and ultimately deter illegal fireworks use.
Security Upgrades for City Facilities
In response to recent burglaries at the Public Works shop, the council approved spending up to $30,000 on security upgrades, including cameras and other surveillance equipment, for city properties.
