Normandy Park City Manager’s Report for week ending Jan. 3, 2025

New Bulk Waste Benefit for Residents in 2025

Beginning in 2025, WM (Waste Management) Normandy Park single-family residential customers can now place up to one large appliance or one piece of furniture for bulky collection for free during the calendar year. This includes a refrigerator, freezer, stove, dishwasher, washing machine, clothes dryer, water heater, sofa, mattress, table, and similar items.

Electronics and small appliances are currently free for bulky collection. Electronics include computers, audio and video equipment, TVs, cell phones, and other equipment containing circuit boards. Scrap electronics must be no larger than 2’x2’ per unit and must be less than 60 pounds each. Small appliances include items such as microwaves, toaster ovens, and others.

Customers must call to request a bulky pickup at least one day prior, and pickups will occur on your garbage day collection. Call 855-NPARKWM (855-672-7596), Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., to schedule a bulky pickup.

City’s Online Permitting System Continues to Improve Efficiencies

Normandy Park’s online permitting system, SmartGov, completed its second successful year, improving efficiency and meeting customer expectations. Its implementation has streamlined the entire permitting process, from application intake and material review to permit issuance.

The permit issuance timelines in 2023 showed that online permit applications reduced the average issuance time to 28 days. The green-orange trendline in Figure 1 below illustrates this. In 2024, the green-white trendline reveals an even further reduction in issuance timelines, with 2024 applications taking a median of 31 days to issue, compared to 41 days in 2023.

A deeper look into respective application types reveals the reduction in the average number of days from completion to issuance. For example, a permit for a building remodel went from 42 days to 17 days for issuance.

SmartGov’s efficiency highlights the city’s commitment to timely permit review. Through consistent delivery of results and services, Normandy Park’s online permitting continues to signify a win for its residents and customers.
